If you are wondering what I have just said, that’s hello in Mandarin (Pǔtōnghuà). You say it as nǐ hǎo.

I don’t know why but I’m really hooked to learning Mandarin. I have been wanting to learn a new language since I was young but it’s only now that I seriously worked on language learning.

I think I am making good progress with spoken Mandarin and reading Pīnyīn. I am still having a hard time with the four tones but I am slowly getting the hang of it. My Chinese colleagues in a project think I’m quite good at Mandarin already though I only know very few phrases.

Anyway, the biggest stumbling block for anyone learning Mandarin is memorizing the Chinese characters. Imagine, there are thousands of characters used in daily life! Goodness. So what I am doing now is memorizing four characters a day. So far, I know roughly 140 characters. At this rate, I’ll know around 1400+ characters by December 31, 2011. I hope I won’t get tired of doing this.
